The Importance of Providing RSA Training for Hotels

by admin on April 16, 2010

As part of the hospitality industry, hotels provide customers accommodations and food services through their facilities and staff members. In a hotel, meetings and events, entertainment and recreation, and food and beverages are usually provided for customers. The sale of beverages, particularly alcohol, has become a profitable business in hotels. However, with the new State legislations regarding the sale and service of alcohol, hotel owners are now required to provide responsible service of alcohol (RSA) training for their staff.

In Australian states such as Queensland, policies regarding the serving of alcohol are being enforced by State legislations. In Queensland, the RSA training course is becoming important with the implementation of the Liquor Act 1992. By providing training education on the responsible service of alcohol, hotels will be able to avoid various unfavorable situations.

An example of a situation that hotel owners can avoid by the taking RSA training is the serving of alcohol to intoxicated hotel guests. If a staff member at the hotel is unaware of the regulations of the Liquor Act of 1992 and serves alcohol to an intoxicated customer, a fine of $25,000 from the hotel owner and $8,000 from the staff member would be required. Compared to the fine, the cost of providing training education on the service of alcohol is a lot reasonable.

Although providing or requiring hotel staff members to get RSA training is recommended by the State legislations, the training also provides benefits for the hotel.

One of the benefits of requiring RSA training is that it will be easier for the hotel to implement house policies regarding alcohol sale and consumption within the hotel.  Aside from easier implementation of house policies, the RSA training will help hotel staff members avoid situations that may result in fines for the Hotel.

For the hotel owner, getting the RSA training course may help ensure that the business runs smoothly and profitably. By taking the course, hotel owners will be provided with updated information regarding the State legislations involving RSA and their obligation in maintaining a safe environment for customers.
